In 1994, American IT journalist Stewart Alsop Jr. predicts that the mainframe gets unplugged by Mar 1996 based on the growing power of computing PCs. However, he withdraw his words in 2002. Mainframe computing has grown by 30% annualy since 1992.
Processing power is one aspect of the mainframe remains unmatched, and it is one of the mainframe strengths that has seen continuous improvement over the years.
Even today, many companies rely on mainframe systems to keep their business running, including 71% of Fortune 500 companies. Mainframes also handles 87% of the world's credit card transactions, making it an important system for business.
